In 1997, Nike designer Sean McDowell penned the first sketches of what we now know as the TN Air Max Plus. Over the preceding decades, the TN has developed a Cult status among many sneakerhead communities across the globe. Tasked with creating a new running shoe that utilised Nike’s new Tuned Air technology, the project which worked in coordination with Footlocker was titled ‘Sky Air’. Upon hearing this, McDowell’s mind turned to memories of the setting sunset in Florida, where gradient colours and the shadowing palm trees inspired the upper’s iconic fades and TPVR (Thermoplastic Vinyl Resin) welded lines.

To celebrate the TN’s 20th Anniversary in 2018, Nike retro’d the OG “Hyper Blue” and “Orange Tiger” colourways. These not only sold out, but resonated with both new and existing fans of the silhouette. Premium editions from NikeLab as well as hybrid versions such as the Air Max Plus/97 continue to prove how relevant different interpretations of the icon are. The TN Air Max Plus even drove sales for Nike’s 2017 addition to the Air Max lineage with its Air Vapormax Plus, one of the brand’s best-selling silhouettes during 2018/19 that is still available to buy in 2023.
